This story is set mostly in Germany between 1938 and1951. Many are familiar with during-the-war tales of horror and inhumane treatment, but little did I know of the pain and deprivation suffered by many in Germany after World War II. Even though the war was declared ended, it was not truly over for many for years to come.
In her struggle to save two widows of the men who had sided with resistance, Marianne ends up causing them more pain by her high-minded judgement and misguided actions. Sometimes horrifying and yet understandable and reflective, it is a moving read for those who like to draw from lessons learned.
